The Bullet Marks
Let’s spare a moment Leaving behind the jobs at hand Let’s walk through the bustling bazaars Crossing the history’s narrow lanes In the vicinity of Golden Temple Let’s visit an open ground and bow our heads to this land.
On all four sides Stand the beaming houses multi-storeyed some built with ancient small bricks some with modern big bricks On the walls of these houses Old wounds left by the bullets Tell us the tale of our struggles.
This flame sculpted from stone is a mark of the conviction. The storms of oppression and wrath could not extinguish it.
We are sitting In the mottled shade of this plant Our children will eat its sweet fruit.
On this ground Our ancestors Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims nurtured this plant with their blood.
The festival of Visakhi became Sakhi, a testimony On that Sunday afternoon The mindless ruler reaped the tyranny and brutality In no time harmless, unarmed, innocent people were put to ground.
But the flame that was lit in those bodies, never dims down and in the rain of bullets the truth is never wounded the ideals never die.
These are not bullet marks It is our history written on the walls of Jallianwala Bagh.
In this ground flowers nurtured with blood will bloom every day. That tree will give a dense shade Our children will eat its sweet fruit.
