ਅਸੀਂ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਦਾ ਅੰਕ ਈਜਾਦ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਚੀਨ ਸੱਭਿਅਤਾ ਦੇ ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਸਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਬੰਦ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਸਾਡਾ ਮੂਲ ਮੰਤਰ ਬਣਕੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਖੂਨ ਵਿਚ ਊਂਘਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਮੱਥੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਫਸੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਆਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਹੋਵੇ ਛੋਟੀ ਜਾਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਜਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡੀ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਹੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੁੱਲ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਜਿਸਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਲਗਦੀ ਉਹ ਦਸ ਗੁਣਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਚੌਕੇ ਮਗਰ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਚੌਕੇ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਲੀ ਬਣਾਓਂਦੀ ਸਾਤੇ ਮਗਰ ਲੱਗਕੇ ਸੱਤਰ ਬਣਾਓਂਦੀ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਦੂਸਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਲੱਗਣ ‘ਚ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਟੌਹਰ ਸਮਝਦੀ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਦਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਮੂਹਰੇ ਲੱਗਣ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਅਰ੍ਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਵਾਂਗ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਲੱਗਣ ਗਿੱਝ ਗਏ ਹਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਦੇ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਖੱਬੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਇੱਕ ਚਮਤਕਾਰੀ ਹਿੰਦਸੇ ਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਲੱਗ ਕੇ ਵੱਡੀ ਰਕਮ ਬਣਾਵਾਂਗੇ ਖੱਬੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਵਾਲਾ ਖੁਦ ਹੀ ਨਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਇਕੱਲੇ ਛਟਪਟਾਓਂਦੇ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਦੇ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਲੰਮੀਆਂ ਉਦਾਸੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਾਬੇ ਤੋਂ ਉਦਾਸੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਵਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਗ ਸਕਦੇ ਕਿਓਂਕੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਗੋਲ ਪ੍ਰਕਰਮਾ ਤਾਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਉਦਾਸੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ ਸਕਦੇ ਆਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਅਲਮਸਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਉੱਡ ਸਕਦੇ ਪਰਵਾਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਉੱਪ ਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਵਾਂਗ ਨਿਸ਼ਚਿਤ ਗੋਲ ਧਾਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਘੁੰਮ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਸਾਡਾ ਮਾਰ੍ਗ ਤਾਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਜ਼ੀਰੋ ਵਰਗਾ ਗੋਲ ਜਾਂ ਇਲੈਪਟੀਕਲ ਜੋ ਭੂਤ ਓਹੀ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਪੈਰਾਬੌਲਿਕ ਪਾਥ ਬਾਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੋਚ ਸਕਦੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅਨੰਤ ਭਵਿਖ ਤੋਂ ਡਰ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ Punjabi Transliteration: asin zero da ank eejaad karan vaali pracheen sabhiata de varatman haan saare paasiaan ton band zero sada mool mantar banke saade khoon vich oonghdi phirdi hai jaan saade mathe vich phasi hoee hai zero kise vi aakaar di hove choti jaan vaddi jaan bahut vaddi zero hi rahindi apna mull kujh nahin hunda jisde magar lagdi uh das guna ho jaanda chouke magar lagg ke chouke nun chali banaondi saate magar laggke sattar banaondi zero doosriaan de magar laggan ‘ch hee aapni tohar samajhdi zero da kise de moohre laggan da koee arth nahin hunda aapne zero da ahisaas surakhkhiat rakhkhan vale asin zero vaang doojiaan de magar laggana gijhjh gaye haan asin kade sochia ki khabbe paase vaale ikk chamatkaari hindse de magar lagg ke vaddi rakam banaavange khabbe paase vaala khud hi na riha taan asin reh gaye ikkale chatpataonde zero de zero lammeeaan udaasiaan vaale aapne baabe ton udasiaan da var nahin mang sakde kionke asin zero varagiaan gol parkarmaan taan kar sakde haan udaasiaan te nahin charh sakde aakaash vich almasat nahin udd sakde parvaaz nahin bhar sakde upp grih vaang nishchit gol dhaare vich hi ghumm sakde haan sada marg taan ho sakda zero varga gol jaan elepptical jo bhoot ohi bhavikhkh parabolic path baare nahin soch sakde saanu anant bhavikh ton saanu darr lagda hai

English Translation: we are the present of an ancient civilization that invented zero

zero closed from all sides it has become our mantra it got rooted in our blood or is stuck in our mind zero can be of any size small, bigger or the biggest still remains a zero does not possess any value but if it follows something zero makes it ten times it follows four and makes forty it follows seven and makes seventy zero feels proud in following something zero does not matter at all if it leads something we feel secure being a zero like zero we are accustomed to follow others sometime back we thought to follow a mercurial left side digit and to be heavy amount but the left sider vanished itself and we were left alone a mere zero again we can’t ask our baba baba, the traveler of novel paths to give us strength to travel new paths because we can follow round paths like a zero but can’t look to discover new paths can’t fly in the endless sky can’t take a free flight like a satellite we can rotate in fixed orbit like a zero our path can be circular or elliptical the same past and future we can’t think of and parabolic path we are scared of and endless future

This poem by Jaswant has always triggered a number of thoughts about science, mathematics and interpretations in life. I would point out though that 0 as a place denomination as in 10 and 100 is different in nature to 0 on its own. 0 on its own is notional the integer between 1 and -1. Also ‘0’ as the point of inflection, provides a place holder for an opportunity to neutralize the opposing views into common understanding. Thanks for posting this on your blog.

Gurinderjit The mathematical interpretations of the poem did not hit me that hard. What hit me actually was intellectual bankruptcy of our civilization which was the thought leader at the times when zero was discovered and we shamelessly follow the western civilization these days. Regards, Jasdeep
